Joist doesn't match dimension of joist hanger!

I am building a shed in our back yard, and I got some Simpson PF26 joist hangers at Home Depot, but the 2x6 studs that I got are almost 1/4" too tall for the hangers! Must I go and notch the ends of each joist? Am I missing something?

The height of a 2x6 is roughly 5 1/2", but can vary depending on the mill, moisture content, etc. The best way to lay out joists is the use a piece of scrap 2x6 and mark the bottoms on your beam or ledger for hanger placement.

Stan, Welcome to the Forum

The PF26 hangers are 5-3/8'h
standard 2x6's are 5-1/2h
You don't have to notch anything if you have standard size lumber

Obviously the joists will stand slightly proud of the connection, but then so will the hanger-hanger.

Just use a conventional face mount hanger

Or a bigger hammer.

I've already notched the 2x6's. Looking good.

The 1/8" is for the standard shrinkage of a 2x6 from 19% MC at the mill, to installed thickness at 11%MC after building is heated. Your engineered lumber (LVL, ParaLams, Glulams, I-joist, etc.) doesn't shrink at all, takes different hangers so the tops are installed flush.
