Question

J Channel Around Windows

I am putting Vinyl Siding on an addition. The windows I have installed have a channel built in. Can I use this for my vinyl or do I still need to install the J trim?

I have seen it done both ways. My pref is to use the built in channel, as it is cleaner, but I have seen others do it by installing another channel around the window (looks quite ugly in my opinion)

Using the built in J channel will be more weather tight than having another seam for water to enter.

That is exactly what it is designed for. Be vigilant about sealing the window flange to the wall.

Not to hijack your post, but I too am in the process of an addition with windows with a built in j channel. Do you have to add some kind of flashing at the top to stop rain from getting between siding and housewrap? Thanks in advance!!
