Iron Pipe Load Question
I recently installed a 2X12 collar tie in my garage to hang a boxing bag from (100lbs).

I want to attach an iron pipe to this collar tie, and the other end to the end wall on a doubled stud.

I was in the hardware store, and just wondering if 3/4" pipe will span roughly 5' w ith my weight on it (let's say 200lbs to be conservative)? Will 1" pipe do it?

I want to use this for a pullup bar. Any bigger than 1" and it's hard to grab.

If I had to I could install another 2X12 to make the pipe span less, or figure out some other framing, but this would be the best way.

Not only would I have a pullup bar, but it would keep the 2X12 from bowing back and forth whilst thrashing the bag.

I think I" would do just fine. I don't think I'd use 3/4".

thanks man. that was my inclination also.
could even go 1 1/4". would be hard to grab, but also better for grip strength in the end.

Most pro gym bars are 1-1/4". And one study I read listed 1" as the most popular DIY bar diameter. I personally like the larger bars. I use 1-1/2", (and my fingers DO feel it.)

True the 3/4" bar will let you do more pull-ups, but it also does not work your forearm muscles nearly as much. This is where your gripping and torsional resistance strength is developed. Those guys you see on TV stopping a punch by catching and gripping their assailant's fist with one hand? Mainly forearm strength.

But I think 1" will do you fine. 3/4" might tend to bow some. Heck, put up both, and work everything.

Actually, I mainly use my Total Gym and my wife's Nordic Trac.

One thing I forgot to mention was to install the bar loosely, so it will freely rotate. Yes, again, this makes the workout harder, but it adds to the number of muscles you work at the same time. And what's the point of an "easy" workout?
