I am investigating the use of IPE decking for a deck I am going to build. I've doen soem research ont eh internet and it appears that IPE is better than most locally sourced woods and composites. But, I can not find any lumber yards locally that say they can get the stuff.
Any idea where I can find IPE in the Cleveland area or even order it from and have it shipped here?
....dont know where to get it in Cleveland. Search lumberyards in your area and start making phone calls. Somebody has to be able to get it.
....I've installed Ipe a variety of ways. I've used Ipe clips, which are a hidden fastener system, and I have also counterbored the face of the board for screws and then plugged the holes with Ipe plugs. I think face screwing and plugging is a more solid install but you can tell it has plugs in it.
....and you'll need a chopsaw with a new blade, maybe 2 depending on the size of your deck. Use a product called Anchor Seal on all fresh crosscuts to prevent checking.
....Only used one sealer on Ipe and that is Messemers UV Protectant for Hardwoods. Brings out the beauty and has some UV inhibitors.
Thanks for the info. Your deck looks awesome! How long have you had your deck? Have you benn happy with it? What type of yearly maintenance do you have to do to it? I read that when you initally install you are supposed to coat all sides of the board (with Mezzers or something else). Is this what you did?
....not mine. Belongs to a customer. Been up for about 4 years now and havent received any negative feedback. And yes, sealed all around except for crosscuts.
Does the coating need to be applied on all surfaces every time? What frequency? I am looking at placing on a deck that would be about 24" above ground and by the time you put joices under neath I am not sure I want to be crawlling under that. I'm not claustrophobic....but I might be after that job!!!
yeah...it didnt look bad. And it gives it a different look. Not to noticeable.
1700 plugs though.
Didnt know you could buy them at the time.
Went thru 3 plug cutters.
That’s a lot of plugs, I just do the ends, rails, etc. and hide everything else.
Didn’t know you could buy them, I’ll remember that.
Dang Reps, Their suppose to push that stuff on you whether you want it or not. :furious:
