Insulation woes

I have a bedford stone house, just rplace a window recently and noticed 2-3 inches of space between stone and interior wood frame/barrier. Is this normal? Should i correct and how?

I'd think that space is a good thing. You want to keep the lumber away from a source of moisture (cold stone). If you could seal the back of the studs or the stone wall, it might be beneficial to keep moisture issues at bay.
