Insulation Question
I hope I'm posting this in the right place.

I'm wondering if normal fiberglass insulation is reusable.

The specific situation I have: I bought a house that had insulation on the garage cieling. I was told it's a bad idea to have insulation right up against the cieling, and I honestly don't care much how well my garage is insulated for right now.

I'm in the process of tearing it down and wondering if it would do me any good to use it to try to better insulate my attic. I know the foam spray stuff would be better, but obviously re-using this stuff would be cheaper and save me from a lot of garbage. Are there any problems with reusing it? Does insulation even go bad with age? It doesn't look in too bad of shape.

Any answers, ideas or advice would be appreciated.

I've never heard of such a thing and I'm assuming your talking about fiberglass batts. Thought it was very common practice actually??

Yes, go ahead and reuse the fiberglass batts. If it becomes somewhat compressed, it will lose some R-Value but it will certainly still maintain insulative qualities. Save yourself the money and recycle it!

Seems as though you are aware of the spray foam so before you add anymore insulation to your attic, make sure you seal any areas that come up into your attic with spray foam or caulk. If you can seal and then insulate, you'll be better off yet.

Best of luck.

As advised above... reuse if not wet or other nasty.

If you have more faced batts then ceiling to insulate... it is ok to layer on top of other insulation, but be sure to slash the kraft paper on the overlay so you don't trap moisture in. High RH lowers the performance of fiber glass insulation.

If it looks good, is it still good?
I am also faced with reusing fiberglass insulation. I have a neighbor who's remodel burned... the house is being demolished... but there is some relatively untouched looking fiberglass being tossed which they said I could have.

I have almost no insulation in my attic... this is obviously better than nothing, but is there a drawback I'm overlooking?

bats are mostly whole, I'll be removing any scorched ends.

and HI from a newbie!
