Insulation Outside the roof?

On the dormers I'm building, I can't loose much more head room, so I'm stuck with 6" insulation (cause of the air vent and demensional size of the 2 X 8 rafters) unless I go outside the roof.

Can I put insulation sheeting between the rafters and plywood sheeting?

Other solution?

I can't see how insulation on the inside of the roof would hurt, except for your wallet. The more insulation the better...

Cool

Insulation Outside the roof?

Yes you can, if you mean putting the insulation above the trusses/rafters. One example is SIPs (a piece of insulating foam sandwiched between two pieces of OSB) that are often used between trusses and the finished roof in order to provide ceiling insulation for cathedral ceilings, for example.

Your dormer has a window in it right? Letting in sunlight. 6"s will be plenty for that small of span, you already have the venting in place.

The costs vs. savings in very marginal in this application.
