Have a question. I have an attic that goes over the family room and garage. There is the loose insulation in the attic above the family room, but not above the garage. Would blowing insualtion in the attic above the garage make a temperature difference in the family room? I only have 4"-12" of insulation above the family room so I am thinking I need to add more to get to up to the R-49, then got thinking about the area over the garage. My gut feeling is that if I insualte the attic above the family room correctly, then it shouldn't matter what's over the garage.

you are correct. Is there a wall diving the space between the garage and family room attic? There should be and it should be insulated and drywalled to prevent fire spreading too quickly.

there is no wall. I just went to the HD and Lowe's and found a owens fiberglass, Regal cellulose and a Greenfiber Natural insulation. Is there a type better than another? I have the cellelose currently.
