Question

Insulating a garage

So I have a detached garage that I would like to insulate and provide heat / ac to. I would prefer not to finish off the ceiling as I would like to have shelving run up between the rafters for storage.

What is the best way to insulate the building? The spray on foam looks like a great idea, but how does that work with airflow on the roof since it attaches itself directly to the decking (OSB in this case)? I don't want moisture rotting away the roof from lack of airflow.

And on the walls, would I still need to put a vapor barrier / drywall? Or will this insulation be enough to get the job done?

I guess I'm trying to figure out all of my possible options in this situation.

How do roof vents (and attic vents) work if you are heating / cooling the entire space?

Sorry about all of the questions, but it just seems with every Google search, I get a dozen different answers to each question and each answer leads to a whole new question.

Insulating a garage

Check with your local Building Department on conditioned roofs; http://www.buildingscience.com/docum...r-all-climates

Where are you located? As to insulation thickness, find your Zone, on map or below in closest city; http://publicecodes.citation.com/ico...001_par001.htm

Then use that Zone for thickness required; http://publicecodes.citation.com/ico..._11_sec002.htm

Rafter insulation required thickness; http://publicecodes.citation.com/ico...006_par003.htm

Foam board and sprayed foam require a fire covering such as 1/2" drywall. The vapor barrier depends on location also; http://www.energysavers.gov/your_hom.../mytopic=11810
