My house is built in 1863 (no that is not a typo). Over the many years it has had a lot of work done. Our front vestibule extends out away from the house and is about 5x8. There are shingles on top of this small roof. When we took out the plaster from the ceiling I can look up into what is basically a small “attic” with a peak. There is no ventilation into this area like our actual attic upstairs of coarse. I want to insulate this ceiling because it is a cold area. I know in a real attic one is not supposed to staple fiberglass insulation to the ceiling. Does this rule apply here too? I do not want to damage the shingles. About the only other thing I could do is put up drywall and lay insulation on top of it as I go but it may not stop the cold. Thanks in advance to all who reply.
The vestibule is part of the house so it is enclosed and heated. The vestibule does extend out into the front yard so it is exposed on three sides like a peninsula. There is a pitched roof over the vestibule.
My main concern is the proper way to insulate this pitched roof from the inside while we have access to it.

The ceiling is insulated in the same manner as the rest of the house! Insulation with a Kraft paper, vapor barrier stapled to the ceiling joist would be the easiest!
However, before the attic is closed in, ventilation should be established! Airflow from the soffit's and out a ridge vent would be best!
While you are insulating, don't forget to insulate the section of the main house wall, that faces the attic!
We have to insulate the area becuse the vestibule extends out from the house and it gets cold. I just want to know if I attach the insulation directly to the underside of the roof or do I lay it on the drywall I will attact to rafters.
