Insulating the Ceiling below a Flat roof question?
In the Ceiling, The original work was very tight and professional.
They DID NOT insulate a "6 section that overhangs past the walls.
We have a new flat roof and gutters(which were NEVER there before AFIK).
We are repairing the damage from the old leaky roof.
I feel I should have insulation there now. Any thoughts on why it was not done before? Should I not for any reason?
PS - These Channels are full of wind. I can see easily how they can be sealed from outside.
There is no reason to insulate the overhang. It will do nothing to increase comfort or lower energy costs, since it is beyond the living space. In most cases it is not even a good idea, since the overhang serves as part of the roof system ventilation. Since flat roofs are harder to ventilate than higher slope designs, you do not want to impede any venting that is present by closing it off with insulation. Any airflow across the underside of the roof surface is removing moisture that could condense there.
