Insulating basement ceiling
We have a problem with the section in our house directly above our uninsulated basement. The walls are concrete in the basement. There is no insulation n the floor joists/basement ceiling.

In the winter months the bedrooms above are colder than the rest of the house. In the summer months the bedrooms are hotter than the rest of the house. We thought if we insulated the floor joists with R-19 insulation that maybe it would help make the house more energy efficient, helping warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

We have checked the heat'/ac vents and the air coming through them is cooling as it is set to do.

Would love some information, plase

The basement should be insulated already, to close a sale or before final inspection to occupy the upstairs.

Be safe, Gary

I very rarely see an unfinished basement insulated

Is this a 1 story house & the bedrooms are on the 1st floor ?
Basements usually stay cooler in the summer - if they are fully below ground
How old is the house ?
How much insulation in the attic ?

Are the bedrtoosm at the end of the AC/heating ducts ?
Are they insulated in the basement ?

This from WA State Energy Code:

Any basement with a heat source must have insulated
walls. For a basement to be considered unheated and not
require wall insulation, there must be no heat supplied.
An unheated basement must be thermally isolated from
adjoining conditioned spaces. This would include:

Ceiling insulation (i.e. the floor above).

Insulated stairwell walls.

A weatherstripped access door.

Insulated and sealed ducts and pipes. From:

WHERE are you located?

Be safe, Gary

sounds like its the rest of the insulation that is letting you down in the bedrooms. sitting over a cool basement wont make a room hotter no matter how little or how much insulation

I still don't see where it states he is heating or cooling the basement
Nor have I see any older house with insulation in the basement ceiling unless it was added at a later date
