Insulate crawl space ceiling?

Crawl space is unheated. No insulation under the main floor. Live in Canada so it is cold in winter. Is it worth the cost to insulate?

Done right, eventually all insulation projects are worth the cost, but sometimes that can be a long way inbetween.

What is the floor space of you house and does the crawl space lie underneath the entire main floor?

Is the main floor level with the ground surface or above/below it? More to the point, what temperature is the crawl space in the winter?

Try insulating just the rim joists as a start, and maybe the walls of the crawlspace. I want to do this eventually once I have the money. My rim joists are partially insulated but it's fiberglass, which gets moldy. Need to use foam.

I've insulated all of the crawl space outer walls I've built here, and covered them with wood on the inside as well to 'box it in' and seal the areas.
We'll see how much nicer it is here this winter.... Po) It wasn't bad down there last winter, around 40 to 50, it never got below freezing.

It sounds like you have a vented crawl space now, check with your local B.D. before you close it off. If in a very cold area, you could melt the perma-frost and feel your house settle. You need an exhaust for air changes, per code. Depends on the amount of supply ducts below. May need to cover the foam board.

Do you have plastic on the ground?

Be safe, Gary

17,000 dryer fires a year, when did you last clean the inside of the dryer near motor or the exhaust ducting?

Plastic on the ground is important to stop moisture from seeping up.Any plumbing in the space will need protection from freezing.
