Installing vinyl siding without snap lock punch?

Im installing the vinyl siding in my shed. I dont want to spend $20 on a snap lock punch that i would use only once. Can i make those rivets without the tool?

What rivits? It punches out a rectanguler shaped hole leaving a tab sticking out.
People has been installing siding for a long time before that tool ever came out.
The only time it gets used is where it snaps in under a window where the utility or undersill trim is. But I'd be willing to bet that at least 80% of siding jobs never used the snap lock on the job.
I have several of them and use them all the time on my trim coil, last piece of siding on the sides of the house as well as under the windows.

May be why I've never had to go back and fix a loose piece of material.

snap lock punch is a very old metal working tool not a recent one,i would follow the directions the vsi manual provides for you instead of jury rigging
20 bucks is not too much

I believe he's talking about this tool, not one for metal.

the metal ''crimper'' will also work, and my advise was for the op not a seasoned pro that has developed a system that works for him:thumbsup:

Yep $20 is way worth it compared to your siding falling out.
