installing sonotubes on mucky clay

the deck is 10' x 16' three 8'' sonotubes in very mucky clay, evey time we dug with the auger the clay would cave in, the sonotube is in about 2' clay and the tubes are only 4'.. back fill will be gravel.. wondering if there is anything I can do to reiforce it???, by the way the house is right next to a large creek..
