installing plywood or backer board over decking

I'm planning on enclosing my deck. The deck is 8 years old and the decking is in good condition. Is it alright to install plywood or backer board over the existing decking or is it better to remove the decking?

I plan on insulating and heating the enclosure.

I'll go out on a limb here and guess this is not been approved by the building dept? Has the substructure been inspected for the added weight?
Post a picture and supply as many details as you can.

It was built with the house 8 years ago and was reinforced to hold a hot tube. The existing roof was built at the same time. It was inspected with the house.
I sold the hot tube and now we're closing the deck in. I'm basiclly just building walls and installing windows and a door. I have not spoke the my local building dept. yet.

Just trying to do some research. Before I finalize my plan.

You will find the foundation for this will not be the same as what you need for a enclosed room. (most likely) What do you plan on using for the finished floor? This will determine what your answer is.

You may need to re-inforce the deck for the added weight of walls, windows, doors & ceiling

My deck is overbuilt & would not require any re-inforcement
You'll need to check the deck & have that info for your building inspector.
If it was built to hold a hot tub it should be OK
But in many cases they only re-inforce under the hot tub area

How big is the deck?
What was used for beams, support?

I am saying that the requirements for a foundation is different for a deck (tub or not) or porch than it is for a living area. That will need to be determined and indicated on your plan submitted for your permit. The joists to the deck most likely are fine. Plywood over the decking is fine for carpet.
