I am considering installing a deck (maybe Trex maybe Redwood - still undecided) over the low part of my concrete patio. The previous owner put in a spa onto the lower part of a two level patio (so it is already slightly sloped for water drainage) and we have removed the spa leaving an awkward space.
The concrete patio also has a 6 foot perimeter of earth on the outer side next to a fence which we want to include in the decking thereby bringing the whole patio to one level. No decking will be next to the house but will surround the higher level concrete.
My question is in relation to the frame. Should I drill holes into the patio in order to connect the actual frame to it - or is is sufficient if it just sits on top of it and reaches out into the earth (on to concrete piers)? I live in California and so don't have frost or real rain issues etc.
