inspector says I need a drawing?


I had an inspector at my home checking out a job, and he stated (well told a family member) that I need to get a drawing of the house made up and bring it to zoning to get my improvements approved, get the permits, then get it inspected.

I'm a first time home owner and I'm not afraid to do the jobs to code and do it right... but I'm just unsure of the process.

As of now I'm redoing the entire kitchen from scratch, water supply, and all the windows, siding over the next few months.

What sort of drawing do I need for this, can I throw something together in autocad? I'm not about to spend 1000s on architectural drawings just to approve some darn windows.

What is it they will want to see? I'll call them myself over the next few days.

You should be able to do it in auto cad. You could even use a pencil and ruler, but do an existing and a proposed with measurements and recep/light/switch/and plumbing locations.

You can even draw it by hand if you don't have or cannot afford an autocad program. As long as you lay it all out clearly, and precisely, using a proper 'to scale' way of measurement (i.e.: 1/4" = 1'-0").
Label everything clearly and make it look professional. If you were to go this route, look at, and study some sample plans, you will get an idea of what to include, and how to lay it all out.

Years ago (back when computer screens were black with white lettering) before I purchased some CAD programs, I drew it all by hand and never had a problem getting a permit. (.... I did have 4 years of mechanical and architectural drawing classes, but, really, that shouldn't matter ....)

Base on my experience, the drawing is for major plan, not the final details, such as where and what are you going to change your plumbing location (if any)... and where/what walls allocation..mechanical changes (if any) etc. I don't think you need to detail them at the final inches of your size/locations... just approx.... I think it is a common sense thing... as picture worth more than thousand words for someone to understand what you want to do. You can draw a accurate propertional layout then make photocopies of it, then draw your designs on it and make more photocopies..etc. the layout is also very useful piece of document for yourself down the road when you need to estimate materials such as carpet/tiles..etc.

in my town, electrical is a different permit.. which you should draw some electrical diagram for reference also...
