Increasing basement window size

As I am plugging away at finishing my basement a few things have come up. I framed a bedroom in the basement but the window in the room is very small 10" x 24" this does not meet fire code as a means of egress (I should know!!)

How difficult is it to install larger basement windows? Am I affecting the foundation stability by cutting out part of it?

Any advice is appreciated.

It's easier in a block foundation then a poured foundation. Easier in a sided house versus a brick or stone exterior.

"Am I affecting the foundation stability by cutting out part of it? " ------- not if you add a suitable header to carry the loads above, and it's not within 3' of the corner (or per local Codes).

Yes, you should indeed!

The opening size has less to due with the dwelling occupant escaping on their own as it has to do with a fully equipped firefighter having enough room to gain access to the occupant.

As stated above, post a few pics here so we can help. I've done alot of these through the years (just bid one out last night actually) and have been through some strange ones as well. Anything is possible, but some are more complicated than others.

Two things I'll mention right away is:

Do it NOW, before you put in any drywall, finished flooring, etc......
Expect some fairly expensive/large equipment to be involved to execute this.
