Hybrid log/pole barn cabin

I just bought some land and have a good number of large pine that really dont benefit the wildlife and was thinking on building a cabin with them. The Idea I came up with was initially building pole barn style with 8x8 posts every 8'. Then I was thinking I could use a lag screw and attach a 4x4 to the 8x8 posts like a key. Then I would cut my logs 8' in length, cut a slab of the top and the bottom to give me a flat surface, cut a keyway on each end then lower it down between the posts and just stack them like this, drilling holes and driving rebar at each log. I havent found anything on the internet of someone doing this. Does anyone have any insight on this as to its a rediculous idea or it should work. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks Kevin

This is called "piece-en-piece" log construction, search under that and you'll find something. As I have done it, it used a 2x6 spline and both the vertical member and the end of the log were notched. You CAN simply flatten the log, but you'll find it very difficult to get airtight that way, if that is a concern to you. Alternatively, you could use sill gasket between the logs, but the "right" way is to scribe the upper log to the lower, this takes some practice, and skill, but you wind up with a finished product that is second to none. Rich.
