How to use non-adhesive drywall tape?

I bought a roll of non-adhesive drywall tape to use on a 3'X4' section of drywall (I usually use an adhesive tape). I laid down a thin coat of mud and pressed on the tape but it had trouble adhering and when the mud dried the tape was uneven and still poorly adhered.

Any tips on what I did wrong and how I can improve on this in the future?

Hi, You need to apply a thick and even coat of compound as opposed the "thin" coat that you tried to do it with on your initial attempt.
