Question

How to secure box column?

At the corner of my back porch is a support column. I think it has a box built around it. The box appears to have warped and shifted. I have attached a pic of what it looks like. It shifted several inches. Note the caulk line of where the original location was. There's no indication that the actual support column inside has moved. I see no sign of sagging of the roof or any cracks anywhere. I was able to knock the box back in place, but a day or so later it popped back out. What I'm looking for is suggestions to secure this box so it doesn't pop out again. It's not hurting anything but if we ever go to sell the house I'll need to fix it. It's been this way for about a year.

I'm not sure that simple wooden shims like you'd use in a doorway or for cabinets would work. What do y'all think? Thanks in advance.

How to secure box column?

Is that a PVC post wrap or is the whole thing wood?
Looks like someone used a 4 X 4 as the post inside and then wraped it with 6" wide material without adding spacers to the post first.

Post wrap is either wood or MDF, definitely not PVC.

I would pop off that base and line the post back up. Then you could add Toe Nailed 3" tap Con screws on all 4 sides. I would predrill and counter sink the post wrap so it does not split out.
Highly unlikly it's MDF, that would not last a season outside.
I would replace that post wrap with PVC lumber and vinyl base cap to stop it from rotting because it's in direct contact with the stoop.

Thanks. I guess I should have searched first on shims, to see what kinds are available out there.
