How to replace joist bridging for HVAC ducting?

Hi all,

I want to re-route the hvac ducting in my basement into the joists above to increase ceiling height. Right now, it has cross style joist bridging, so can I just replace it as shown in Figure 4 here, http://www.renovation-headquarters.c...20bridging.htm ?

If so, how much depth (the dimension into the screen) do I need? Would it help to cut a hole into a solid bridge to reinforce it? And, can the ducting rest on the wood, or will I need to support it by hanging just above?
