How much space at the top of a stair case ?

Does anyone know if there is a recommended amount of space there should be at the top of a stair case ?

Finishing the upper level of my 1 1/2 story there will be a bedroom wall at the top of the stairs and I am trying to decide how far away it needs to be from the stairs.

Yes, 6'-8", http://www.arcways.com/pdfs/IRC2006.pdf see page 4

But you really SHOULD leave more like 7 full feet of headroom.

If you are just talking about the floor space at the top, see page 8.

I should have been more specific I am talking about the surface area. The ceiling height is over 7 feet.

I attached a scan of part of the plan that the builder gave me as a suggested layout. I marked the wall I am talking about. They have 8' between the top of the stairs and the bedroom wall. I want to move that wall closer to the stairs and make the bedroom bigger. There isn't going to be a door at the top.
