How much space to leave around windows?

How much space do I leave between all the sides of a window? If I'm doing new framing, and I already know/have the windows I'm using, is it recommended that one still leave space and then shim and caulk, or can one just frame to the windows for a tight, exact fit?

Shim it, 3/8" to 1/2" seems to be the standard on the sides.

Wait? Are you saying 3/8" to 1/2" is what I should leave around the sides? I thought at most, it would be like 1/8" of space all the way around.

I don't know what you should do, all I am saying is that 3/8" - 1/2" on the sides in pretty much the norm.
Do what you want to.

Andy.

I make my rough openings 1/2" wider and 1/2" higher then the window. Most go 1" X1" leaving 1/2" all around.I go half that because I know my framing is square and it takes less to shim. This is on new construction. If you are reframing an old structure your better to go with an inch each way.
You don't shim and caulk the opening. You shim and insulate.

1/8 is not enough. RO should be 1/2" taller and 3/4" wider than the window itself. For the absolute correct answer, look at the instructions on the window itself which will give you both the window size AND the RO size. The idea of the RO being decently bigger than the window itself is to allow you to get the window sitting level and square in the opening. If there is 1/8" all around, and you need to go up a quarter in the lower left corner, you can't
And sure, all of the professionals will say that their openings are dead on.....but studs warp and bow, walls get racked when they are raised, workers might not be as careful as the guy in charge, etc.

It is WAY easier to leave extra than to have to take the wrecking saw to the side or top of an opening to give you room to level up a window. Ron

Making it to small can make a simple 10min. install become an hour or more.
There would be no room to fit the nozzle on the spray foam to insulate.

I have always found that 1/2 "on each side is more than suffiecient. If you need more than that you better check your previous work.

Measuring the rough opening and subtracting a 1/4", this gives you 1/8" on each side. If you have just built the rough opening and need more then that you had better get a different tape, level, pecil, eye, etc..

OR, you could be the guy that follows the manufacturers instructions for the R/O and has no worries. Ron

35 years in construction and its always been 1/2 inch on both sides and 3/4 top, Shims are cheap, turning a easy job into a royal pain in the a$$ ain't worth making the RO smaller

It's usually best for DIYers to use the RO specified by the window manufacturer.
