How much gravel to order?

I need 4" of compact gravel on a 4'x10' area.
So that basically has a volume of 0.5 cubic yards.
How much does gravel shift when compacted? Do I need to order twice that amount?

Gravel won't compact much. Gravel is sold by the ton, but your supplier can get you close to half a yard. More gravel never hurts anyway!

good rule of thumb's been 110# per sq yd @ 1" depth,,, figure out that part & divide by 2,000 = enough for the job,,, i come up w/.98 ton or a small pickup load.

IF gravel ' shifts ', either it wasn't compacted OR the sub-base is soft.

caution you're not crushed or killed by falling/creeping/sinking gravel,,, noticed there's a danger inherent in this work according to the forum gawds
