how much can I widen a deck?

We have a 12x12 foot deck. Pics of it are in my other tread here.

I'm planning to reface and fix it up.

So I'm keeping the frame but would re-do the decking, railings and balusters.

My question: could I somehow go perhaps 1-2 feet wider or farther out from the house?

deck - tear down or reface?

If you are trying to keep the frame the way it is, then your answer is no. In order to make it come out further from the house you will need to cut a foot off the posts, drop the beam under the joist, and then cantilever the joist over the beam a few feet. To make it wider your beam would also have to be longer to support the additional joist you would be installing.
