How many holes can I drill into a wood stud?

Hello DIY Chatroom,

I am very new to the DIY scene. Im more of a computer kind of guy. Recently, I mounted three 23 monitors to wall studs (1 monitor per stud), but I went in blindly and the project came out looking different then I would have wanted it to look (the mounts are not level with eachother, and the result being monitors up to 2 higher then the other ones).

Each mount took up four 3/16 drill holes per stud. My main question is, will it ruin my wall if I make another four 3/16 holes per stud on the same stud, but in a different location (higher/lower)?

Thank you! Any help will make my week. Pictures are available if needed.

Thank you for the response! Just in case if this effects my situation, the holes are all 12" deep- this probably doesn't matter, but just in case.

How did you drill a 12" deep hole in a stud that's most likly only 3 -1/2 deep?

a 3/16 hole wont affect the studs at all, if you were talking 1 - 3/16" yes as its just over 1/3 the overall width of the stud

the question is= can you locate a reasonable position for all 3 mounting brackets in line, in a way that uses same studs, keep level, and cover holes already made? all at once. are the holes in brackets located, so you can raise 3/4" or lower 3/4 and still cover top and bottom holes? measure down from ceiling for level and measure from closest inside corner for plumb lines. try to cover all holes before drilling more! the studs should be okay, as long as holes are 1/2-3/4 above or below other holes.

And 1-3/16 would be over 3/4 of the *thickness* of the studs, which would be the more relevant dimension if his walls are framed like most walls.

But yeah a couple of 3/16" holes aren't going to make any difference.
