How to know if basement walls are exterior insulated?

Is there a way to tell?
Did it become code at some point recently so that builders automatically do this?

Is there some way I can check, or where do I have to go to find out?

My house was built in late 2003 and I live in Michigan. I have city water, and have a sump pump. Not sure if this matters.

Thanks in advance!

Do you have a shovel? Construction practices and code enforcement can vary from area to area.

I do have a shovel, yes I can dig, but what will it look like? How far down do I need to dig? Since I'm not a pro, nor ever used exterior insulation that goes into the ground, I don't know what I'm looking for.

Smart azz...do I have a shovel....

The only sure way if a poured concrete foundation, is to dig down alongside the foundation. If it is insulated you will find an insulating material, typically a foam board in NY, up against the foundation. It will start just below grade or at the top of the foundation and be protected in some manner for the portion of foundation above grade.

Thanks guys I dug down about 1 foot or so and didn't see anything so I'm assuming there isn't any. The house wasn't 'custom' so I'm thinking builders don't add that unless requested.

Buy foam insulation, and install inside your basement. If you're not sure, do it yourself. =)

If you're insulated from the outside, oh well. If not, you'll have insulation for your basement.

You can than claim that when you got o sell the house, you've got an insulated basement, or a double insulated basement. Either way, it wouldn't hurt.
