How to handle the vertical spacing between HardiePanel vertical siding?

I have a 12' x 20' outbuilding that I intended to install T1-11 on. (I like the overlapping joints.) My building material supplier recommended HardiePanel vertical siding as a better alternative.

He suggested installing the 4' x 8' panels vertically, leaving about 1/8" inch spacing between panels. I asked what do you do to keep water out of the spaces between the panels. He told me to use caulk.

I am not comfortable with the caulk idea, as it seems to me to be a poor solution.

QUESTION: What is the best way to apply the HardiePanels and not have any leaky joints?

(Direct replies OK)

Caulking is acceptable with vertical joints between Hardie panels. Use good quality paintable siliconized caulk. You should apply water resistant barrier before any siding and proper flashing with siding. Z flash at horizontal joints etc.

Panels can be installed with vertical joints in what instructions call "moderate contact", touching each other without actually shoving them together I'd say. Then joint can be covered with a batten, or you can use an metal or plastic H strip between panels when installing. Caulk can be used with battens and H strip, battens can go over wider caulked joint.

Make sure you get tech and installation sheets with panels, there are cutting and nailing specs specific to Hardie or other cement panels and trim. And that stuff is heavy.
