How to get sheet metal bent?

I have two sections of sheet metal (2' by 3') that I want cut in half and the edges bent up 1/2". But I have worked with sheet metal before and know it is almost impossible to do right by hand.

Are there shops out there that will do small jobs like this? And how much will it cost? I'm worried its too small a job and no one wants to do it.

I haven't checked lately. But not so long ago, there were sheet metal shops who, in addition to fabricating ducts would do custom work for a nominal fee. But I believe you can do your project by yourself. If you have a vice attached to a workbench! (No matter what) Don't Drink and Drive, ever!!!

Depending on the thickness of your sheet metal. Do you have a skill-saw? Do you have or can get a 2x4 longer than your sheet metal? IF so, then you can bend the edges as you want. With a 2x4 longer than the metal to be bent, use your skill saw to cut a slot through the length of the board, just a little longer than the piece of metal to be bent. Place the metal into the slot to the point where you want to bend it, then bend it to the angle you want it. The slot may not be as tight as you like, and the bent edge may not be as sharp as you want, but it works. Good Luck, David

Depending on how heavy a gauge it is a HVAC shop may do it. Otherwise a welding or metal working shop should have a break to bend it.

One of my HVAC suppliers is pretty cooperative with this sort of thing if I give them time and don't nag them. They are more than reasonable. I had them make several drain pans for an indoor garden and they turned out great.

Harbor Freight has a small metal brake (18") that does up to 16 ga. for $35. This link list other brakes that ar pretty inexpensive.

It a tool you think you don't need to you have one.
