How do I reinforce 3story main support beam
I purchased a 100 year old cement block 3-story home. I am taking out the chimney to run HVAC ducts to the 2nd floor and attic. The chimney appears to be supporting, in the center the main support beam, that spans the length of the house. The beam itself is made of wood and is roughly 6"x6" and it is in 2 sections joined at the connection by some steel plates. What is the best way to add support to this beam. I would like to put up walls under this beam, to finish removing the chimney. Any suggestions?

I recommend you call an engineer and have them look at it. That's the best way to make sure the beams are properly supported. Your chimney sounds like it's supporting the entire interior structure of the home. What ever you put in, it will more than likely involve vertical support all the way through the house, down to the basement, and into a footing. Do yourself a huge favor and call a structural engineer before you get too far. Last thing you want is to weaken the chimney structure, and have something fail. If that happens, the city might condemn the structure.

I second that opinion there are to many possibilities. BOB
