how to cap an airshaft between two buildings

hello: We are in an old building with shared airshafts between buildings. the last owner did not cover the airshafts properly. We have water damage in the cellar and to a few of joists. How do we cap the airshaft to prevent water and rain coming in?

thanks

Why can't you put a roof over it?
Post some photos of the shaft and the surrounding buildings.
