How to built steps that cantilever out

Hi. I have a quasi above ground pool. .. 2 1/2 feet below ground level and about 24 inches above ground level. I want to built steps up and I'd like the top step to be about 20 deep cantilevering out over the pool. Having people sitting/standing on the cantilevered section will put enormous pressure on it. Most steps work, I believe, because the pressure is all downward. This has both downward and outward pressure. Any suggestion how I might build these? I handled the outward pressure in my old house by attaching the structure to my deck that was attached to my house. Unfortunately this pool stands on it own and is not located near the house or decking. Thanks in advance. Paul

Are you going to have a platform at the top of the stair which cantilevers 20" out over the pool? If I'm seeing this right in my mind, you set you landing posts, Run a beam, (2"x10" or 12") between them going parallel to pool side. Then come over that with joists which extend out the necessary length. I'm taking it that you can set the post right next to the pool wall. Hope that helped a little, keep us posted.

How long will this deck be? What is the maximum no. of people that could be on it at one time?
I don't mean the no. of people that will be using it. I mean the no. of people that could be on it if they stood shoulder to shoulder on the edge.

HI... thx for responding. THe pool is 10 sided. the length of this step area will be about 12 feet and take up about 4 of the 10 sides. If people stood shoulder to shoulder I figure 6 or maybe 7 people. And it is not really a deck, but I can understand how the same building principles apply. It's 3 steps the top step is the area that cantilevers out. I wonder if I can post a picture.... I'll try tomorrow... it is after midnight here.

For 7 people, based on 150# ea. you are looking at 1,060#. The minimum safety factor when dealing with loads to support people is 3, so it needs to be able to support a minimum of 3,180#s. I'll wait for the photo's.

How to built steps that cantilever out

Hi. Here are the pictures. You can see that the height of this is about 24 inches and about 3 feet is below grade. I want to build steps up but they can't rest on the structure. If I have to I will build it such that the steps come up to just under the pool railing or if possible an inch higher and jutting out a bit. I am concerned that because the pool has been sunk and there is no retaining wall, that digging post holes to close to the structure might cause the wall area to cave in. But I also realize that if I can't get the post holes close I will not have the support especially when people are standing by the edge of the pool. Hope this isn't too confusing. Thx in advance. Paul:confused:

OK. Got the picture. Where are you located? Will frost heave be a problem? What is the shell material and size?

I live in Toronto.... I know I have to go down 4 feet due to frost. Just not sure of the configuration. I have someone to dig post holes, just don't know their placement. thanks again The shell of the pool is just your typical quasi corrugated rolled steel. What keeps it from caving in is the weight of the water which stays in, less about 1 1/2 feet from the top during the winter.

Oh and one other thing, I'd like to make the steps go about 1/3 around the pool or about 4 of those panel sections you see in the pictures. Thx

The actual configuration (without the supports) is round, correct?

Yes but it is totally round but there are 10 rails going around the top of the pool and they are straight. So it is 10 sided or a decagon.

I guess the rails are slightly rounded.
