Hip rafter connection details

I've been building a small addition to the top of my sunroom and I've come to the point where I'm starting to build the roof. The house has a hip main roof and the builders in 1925 just loaded it up with nails. Is that still an acceptable method of attachment?

Does anyone have an illustration of hip rafter connection details?

I've been thinking about this and how I'd do it is:
1st. Install the center common (how to attach?)
2nd. Cut the two side commons (4 nails in each)
3rd. Cut 2 45 on each hip (4 nails in each? how to attach?)

As SNC said, nail them. Unless in a high wind or seismic area, Check with local B.D.
