Hide a support beam

Tearing a supporting wall down. Someone suggested hiding the beam in the attic to keep the ceiling flush with the other room.?

So what are you asking?

Can this be done?

In some cases, yes in others no. You'd have to ask an engineer if this is an option for you. It's more of a pain to do, but if you have enough help it really isn't too bad.

I had that done years ago. Carpenter needed to add a dormer to the roof there the beam rested on the outside wall. Yes it was more trouble but it worked out fine.
