Help to Remove Stud Supporting Step Platform

Please see attached photo. Is there anyway to remove the stud/support with an arrow pointing to it. I am planning to put in a home theater and I would like to use the area under the steps to house my equipment rack, but the current opening is not wide enough.

There are really 2 issues here.

1. How to support the platform when that smaller stud is removed.
2. How to support the floor joist above (not shown) when the taller stud is removed.

You will need to install a header to carry the load from the one you are removing.
The header size depends on what load is on the studs and your Building Code will define the requirements.
Anything I might suggest would be speculative, since I do not know what your code reads.
Some jurisdictions would require an Engineer to spec the header size.

Have fun.

Does the stud to the right go all the way to the floor ?
What is the distance between the stud on the left (goes to the floor) & the stud on the far right ?

Here is a sample of the framing of a window header and a second image with the floor joists added to the mix resting on the header.
The header needs to be sized by someone who can calculate the loads based on the loads applied to the header. The header for the one with the joists might be bigger/heavier, but an engineer would be the one to say how large and what material to use.
If in doubt, use a stronger header.
