Help with an old fireplace remodel

Hey experts,

I am onto my next project, which is to reface the old brick fireplace. The job would have been easy to do if it wasn't for the fact that the arch in the fireplace comes out about 1.5". My idea was to have the whole face of the fireplace level for my slate to go over.

The question that comes up is how do I secure a wooden frame on the recessed part of the fireplace? I want to overlay a cementboard (backer) so that it gives me a smooth, and level surface for my tile to go on.

Thanks a lot for your help and input.

I would look at the possability of cutting the brick down level, maybe with a rotozip and 3" diamond blade.

If that is not possible, I would probably just build up a mortar bed to level the rest of the fireplace with the lip.

Yeah I have considered building up a mortar bed to a level with the arch. I was just concerned with the added weight of that much mortar.

So a diamond blade would work with brick?

It isn't that much considering, and sure a diamond blade will cut brick. Have someone hold your shop vac nozzle behind the blade though!
