Have you considered a second floor? The best way to change the way a house looks is to adjust the roof lines and slope. Adding a second floor will help justify the costs of these changes, dramatically changing the look, while getting the additional space you need.

All houses have walls that go straight up. They have been building walls the same forever. Roofs on the other hand vary by decade and can really impact how dated your home looks.

Just a thought.

Perhaps you should think about obtaining the services of an Architect or Residential designer.

We/she/he/they can answer all the questions you have plus many more you are not thinking about but need to be considered.

Andy.

Hi, there are lots of online photos you can access, including ones on my website. you can go to istockphoto.com, flickr.com and type in "room addition" or "home addition" and you will get a lot of photos.

There are many things to consider for a home addition, not the least of which is how you will use the new room, and how it will relate to the rest of the house, both of which will determine the type of home addition (one room at grade, second story, multi-story) that is best for you. I would suggest looking at photos on the net, or go to websites that sell floor plans for home additions to get some ideas.
