Help with building a loft in my garage please

I have a 2 stall detached garage. I am looking to make a loft/ second floor for storage. the garage is 24 feet wide and 20 feet long. i currently have a center beam made up of 4 2x6 nailed and bolted together and supported by a 6x6 pressure treated post on either end. i want to to build it with no center support and was wondering if this wood work. Somebody told me to make roof trusses. the rafters are 2x6s. he said to run a 2x6 across one side to the center support. come in 5 feet and run a 2x4 stright up and then a 2x4 diag to the rafters. attach them using a nail plate and then run a 2x4 across the top about 6.5 feet above the floor so i have room to walk. use plywood as the floor. just was looking for some help.

thanks

shawn

ps i know using a laminated beam wood be best but not really interested in spending 600+ dollars for beam.

As a firefighter for 21yrs. Don't use Gusset plates. I have 3 years of rehabilitation and scars on 40% of my body because of them. I still fight to be first and to save.

Well, where does one begin?

I guess by saying that you really ought to have this designed to code, even if you are not in an area that requires it.

You could throw together any assortment of lumber-like sticks and call it good or do you want to have a well made and safe loft storage area?

My suggestion is to find a pro to design it for you then you can go to DIY Town, on the project, as it were.

Andy.
