a buddy of mine has a nearly 100 lb ceiling light that he wants suspended from his dining room ceiling. the ceiling has 2x6 joists underneath the sheetrock.
i suggested that he be conservative and obtain a brace that would wrap on three out of four sides of the lumber and be screwed into it on the sides with a hook that is welded (not screwed) to it. that, IMO, would be a safe way to go.
1. is this an overkill ? i.e. would a simple screw-in hook be safe to withhold that kind of weight ?
2. if not, do you know where to get such a brace ?
