can you take out a header and put up two more to replace the one you took out? We are talking about a basement trying to put bedrooms in and the hearder well be in the way and there are 4x4 holding it up

any help your be great

Someone would have to be on sight to look it over to tell you that one.
You do have permits for this work right?
How many windows do you have down there and how big are they.

What he said, basments with living, and especially sleeping space require an emergency exit.

Basement headers are usually not supporting anything, so it is easy to expand them. But a look-see from someone qualified would be advised.

It seemed hard to believe someone would have used a 4X4 instead of 2 X 4's. Sounds more like it could be a coloum for floor support.

Is the header holding up floor joists?
Also, there must be a window in each bedroom, a minimum size per code, for a fire escape.
