Header size for wall opening
I'm planning on making an opening in a load bearing wall to open up my kitchen to the dining room. The wall is carrying the second floor joists that are running perpendicular to the wall.
The opening is going to be 9' 6" wide and I can go as deep as 2' with the header. Can anybody please tell me what kind (dimension) of header do I need to complete this project.
Thanks in advance.
I would suggest 2 Laminated beams 11 7/8 with at least 3 inches of bearing on either side.
This is probably overkill but better safe then sorry.
Also don't just take my word there may be more bearing on this than you or I are aware of. Get a contractor to look it over. Most will give you advice for a nominal fee. Your other option is to get a complete set of plans and ask your local building inspector what you need.
