Header size

I am getting ready to build a cabin and the wife wants double hung windows in the bedrooms. I am trying to figure out the minimum size for headers. I figured if I use some type of engineered product I could go smaller . She wants the windows as far off the floor as possible (don't know why). I am doing 2 x 6 construction with a 50 Lb snow load. The bedrooms are upstairs and are on the weight bearing wall. The windows she likes are rough openings W 42 1/2 L 56 1/2.

I use 2x10's or 2x12's & put the header right up against the top plate
I also do a 2x6 wall & use an insulated triple header

Depends on the roof span, 2x6's may work with 50# snow, Page 2: http://www.colonie.org/forms/building/bdspanab.pdf
Notice the jacks on each side. Sounds like you have egress: http://illowaicc.org/uploadedFiles/I...20Openings.pdf

Be safe, Gary

I am not really looking for a specific ( you can use this at this size). What I am looking for is different products other than standard lumber . I was wondering if someone out there made something different that could stand up to a higher load in a smaller size ( like a steal header with nailing brackets). Guess not oh well I guess it will be lvl or standard lumber. Thanks guys.
