header size?
 
Between the kitchen and dining room I currently have 30" opening. I would like to expand this opening another 5 feet to a 8' opening.

I will be removing 4 2X4 studs. I will build a header made of 2 2X6 on end to span this opening. This is A LOAD BEARING WALL.

Will this be enough? Would a 2X8 pair be better?

2x6's will not do it on a load bearing wall with an 8' opening
What load is bearing?
Is there another wall above this?
Is the roof supported by any wall/bracing above?
Stick built roof or trusses ?
I used (3) 2x10's on a 7' opening
I would have used 2x12's but needed more clearance to the floor

I suggest visiting a lumber store & have them size the beam based on your loads

1. What is the house span? 20', 28' 36'?

2. Number of floors supported? One or two?

The opening will actually be 6.5 feet. From the stud at the start of this there becomes a 30" doorway to the exterior wall stud.
It is a two story house. I believe the length is 72' but have not measured.

The wall I am opening is in the middle of a 30' 2X8 span. With the first 2 studs carrying 2 transfer 2 2X8 from the bathroom above.

Also, to follow this up, where the 30' 2X8 are supported on the other side, there are 8 studs that are split in the center with a 2X4 sitting flat running through them. Should I remove these one by one and put up a full length 2 X4, it seems to be the right way to support a load bearing wall.

BTW the span is 20' feet. I went the long way.

I would use 2-2x12's to be safe, with two jacks (supporting) on each side. And to pick up any roof/purlin load. Use an extra 2x bottom plate on each side, flat between studs stacked and nailed on the old to help distribute the point load over the small area. OR, a much better option, if access to the floor below, add solid blocking to the wall or beam below. (2x's directly under, on end are fine)

"From the stud at the start of this there becomes a 30" doorway to the exterior wall stud." ------ Are the joists above lapping at this wall that runs lengthwise with the house? How does this tie into the exterior wall if it is 15' away?
I need a picture of the flat studs from 6' away.
