Header Size
Hello all, I have a lean to shelter built on the back of my shop measuring 14x30. The top consists of 2x6 on 24'' centers stripped with 2x4 on 24'' center. 36'' 28 ga metal roofing on top.I have post on each end and one in the middle that I would like to remove.Header size is 2x8 with 1/2'' plywood in between.Could I bolt steel plate to the existing header for support? Please advise. Glenn Middle Georgia

Do you need permits?

You have the double 2x8 spanning 15'? 1/2 the 30'.

30' is a long span for a non engineered beam.

So its 30' long. You have a post in the middle that you want to remove. By the information you have provided, the double 2x8 header with ply would have to break on the center post. It would take a pretty long piece of steel say 8' front and back of the header , minimum thickness of 1/2'' steel with minimum 12- 6''x 3/4'' ASTM325 through bolts.. Gotta ask.. Why do you want to remove this post.

Not only is it way to long he wants to remove the only thing holding it up.. He should be asking how many more posts he should put under it .

There is more to the size of a header than just how long of a span. Weight of the roof and how much weight is being put on it as well as unsupported length.

To answer your question. I don't think bolting on some steel would be sufficient. How about some pics?
