Have an exterior wall 8' high 2" x 4" 16" on center with a 3' wide x 5 1/2" high header opening. It is a recess in the wall and does not go through to the outside. Cant fasten the header to the supporting studs from the sides. Face nail or screws. Thanks.

Can a 2 1/2" #8 screw be used instead of the nail? How many nails or screws needed for each side of the 2 x 8 header? Also, the short header studs from the header to top plate can they be screwed with 2 1/2" x #8 screws 2 each top and bottom of header stud total of 4 per header stud? Thanks.

no you cant use 2 1/2's, they need to be 3 or 3 1/2's.. both through the end of the header into the king studs and at the top of the header up in to the top plate
