header for air conditioner?

I want to add a wall air conditioner in one of my bedrooms. Do I need to build a header for the air conditioner or can I just frame it out with 2x4's?

thanks!

IF you are going to be cuttin out even one 2x4 wall stud: Then a header is appropriate in this case.

Can you put the AC under an existing window? That would make the job easier because the window's header already takes care of the structural load.
