Having difficulty getting plumb cut for shed roof rafters
Im trying to make the roof for a shed im building, but can't get the plumb for the roof rafters.
Im looking on the internet to make a roof rafter, but still confused. I got the pitch level of my roof. I scaled it to 12" x 4". I made a triangle template from it and got the angle for the plumb cut, but the plumb cut not working properly. Im really stuck. Not sure what other methods their are too find plumb cuts to are simple for me to understand. |

What do you mean you cant get the plum? Is your ridge set? Do you know what a plum cut is? Do you know what a birds mouth is. How wide is your room. If your ridge is set how high is it off of the top plate? If you answer that we can set you on you way.

I got the run at 38.5 inches, the rise is 8.5 inches, I got the rafter length 39.5 inches(I'm remembering these numbers off the top of my head). I made the cut where the rafter sits on the beam. My problem is at the birdsmouth, the angle cut their isn't properly.

those number give 12x2.6 pitch not a 12x4 pitch. That's your problem.

ill try that 12x2.6 pitch and see what happens. Also my measurements were run 38.5 inches, rise 8.75 inches, and my rafter length was 39.5 inches.

i have a feeling your using the hip rafter angle on the speed square not the common rafter cut

Check out this guy's speed square. Looks like the 1/4" rip marks are on the wrong side! puttster |
