Hardie Plank Siding/Brick Flashing?

I will soon be adding an addition to my home. We will effectively be enclosing a "dog ear" in the current house's footprint, squaring it off with the rest of the home. The house is constructed from solid brick (8" thick, but the addition will be constructed with wood studs and covered in Hardie Panel (Hardie's vertical siding. I am attaching a photo of the site for further clarification.

My question is, how do I handle the vertical seam between the addition, hardie plank, and the original home, brick. Clearly I cannot just but the Hardie Panel up to the brick as water could easily enter, but would flashing work in the application?

Any help would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks!

Hardie Plank Siding/Brick Flashing?

i would hold the new wall back a few inches from the face of the existing brick face, any framing matireial that is in contact with masonary should be treated,id caulk the space between the new framing and the brick with a urethane caulk.Iwould use a 12'' strip of tar paper an butt it to the brick then i would install the house wrap.Next i would use either 5/4 hardi or azek trim and space it off the brick about 1/4'' to have some room for the caulk then install the hardi panel as usual.vertical seams are a little easier to accomplish than horizontal ones

Hardie Plank Siding/Brick Flashing?

Thanks so much! This is great information. If you don't mind, I have a couple of follow-up questions.

1) When you reference "holding the new wall back a few inches," do you mean the rough wall or the finished wall? Would it be sufficient to hold it back such that the 5/4 trim is even with the existing face?

2) With regards to caulking "the space between the new framing and the brick," are you saying I should run caulk all along the side of the framing member, before bolting it to the brick wall, or just run a bead of caulk along the vertical seam created after I attach the faming member to the brick wall?

3) I am not really sure what you are saying with the strip of tar paper? Can you give me a better idea of what I should be doing?

4) When caulking the vertical seam between the hardie trim and the brick, would I use the same urethane caulk?

Hardie Plank Siding/Brick Flashing?

i would probably like to see the finished wall back at least 1'' so your not dealing with a flush joint to try to seal
I like to have at least a double water barrier on any corners, the strip of felt is a little added insurance
i would caulk under the 2x and along side
yes i would use a window and siding urethane along the trim and the brick
